Do Miracles Really Exist, or is the Reality that Every Aspect of Our Existence is Truly Miraculous?

Elevating the Spiritual Level of the Jewish Nation

The Concept of Miracles and the Hidden Hand of Hashem

The survival and flourishing of the Jewish people throughout thousands of years of exile stands as one of the greatest anomalies in human history. Nations rise and fall, empires crumble, yet a relatively small group of people has maintained its identity, faith, and vitality despite being scattered across the globe. This enduring existence is not merely a historical curiosity but a profound testament to the miraculous nature of Jewish existence. To truly understand this phenomenon, one must look back at the very inception of the nation. The founding of the Jewish people was fundamentally supernatural. Abraham and Sarah were physically incapable of having children due to old age and biological limitations. Yet, through divine intervention, Isaac was born. This foundational event established a blueprint for the future, demonstrating that the existence of the Jewish nation transcends the standard laws of nature and biology.

Redefining the Miraculous Through Nature

A common perspective defines a miracle as an extraordinary event that breaks the laws of nature. However, a deeper analysis within Torah thought reveals a different reality. The Hebrew word for nature, teva, shares a root with the word meaning embedded or sunken. This implies that nature is simply divine will that has been deeply embedded into a repetitive, predictable cycle. When a person realizes that Hashem is the ultimate source of nature, the distinction between the natural and the supernatural begins to dissolve. The sunrise is no less a manifestation of divine power than the splitting of the sea. The only difference lies in human perception. Because the sun rises every day, humans categorize it as natural. Because the sea split once, humans categorize it as a miracle. True wisdom lies in altering one’s perception to recognize that the daily, predictable functioning of the world is itself a continuous, unfolding miracle.

Pesach and the Power of Open Miracles

The holiday of Pesach, or Passover, represents the era of open miracles, known in Hebrew as nissim gluym. During the Exodus from Egypt, Hashem openly shattered the laws of nature to redeem the Jewish people. The ten plagues systematically dismantled the Egyptian ecosystem, and the splitting of the Sea of Reeds completely upended physical boundaries. These events served a specific pedagogical purpose. They were designed to shatter the illusion of independent worldly power and to show both Egypt and the young Jewish nation that Hashem possesses absolute mastery over creation. In this era, the divine presence was undeniable, forcing observers to acknowledge a power greater than the physical world. While these open miracles were necessary to forge the nation, they represent a temporary suspension of the cosmic order rather than its ultimate purpose.

Purim and the Masterpiece of the Hidden Hand

In stark contrast to Pesach, the holiday of Purim represents the concept of hidden miracles, known as nissim nistarim. The story recorded in the Scroll of Esther contains no open wonders. There are no seas splitting, no plagues, and no voices calling out from heaven. In fact, the name of Hashem does not appear a single time in the entire text. Instead, the story unfolds through a series of seemingly random political events, royal parties, court intrigues, insomnia, and coincidences. A king gets angry at his queen, a new queen is chosen, a plot to assassinate the king is uncovered, and a wicked minister rises to power. To a secular historian, this looks like mere politics. However, when the entire tapestry is woven together, it becomes clear that a Hidden Hand was orchestrating every detail to bring about salvation. Purim teaches that true divine power is often expressed not by breaking nature, but by weaving seemingly natural events together to achieve a specific, divine outcome.

The Ultimate Miracle of the Everyday

Comparing Pesach and Purim allows for a profound synthesis of how divine energy interacts with the world. While open miracles are breathtaking, they are also intrusive, temporarily halting the system that Hashem put in place. The hidden miracle, however, is a greater display of mastery. It allows human free will to exist and lets the physical world run its course, yet it still flawlessly achieves the divine objective. This realization brings the observer back to the primary miracle of Jewish survival. The fact that the Jewish people continue to thrive through natural-looking means, despite facing overwhelming historical odds, is the ultimate expression of the Hidden Hand. The daily existence of the world, the breath in every creature, and the continuity of the Torah are the truest miracles of all, disguised beautifully as the everyday reality of nature.
