Gehinnom is a real and concrete metaphysical realm. It is not a mere metaphor or symbol, but an actual state of existence for the soul after it departs from the physical body. Classical Torah sources, including the Talmud and early commentaries, outline the structure, spiritual mechanics, and absolute reality of this realm. While it is often translated into English as hell, Jewish theology approaches its existence from a fundamentally different perspective than other belief systems, rooted entirely in the framework of absolute Divine justice and compassion.
THE DIVINE PURPOSE AND BENEFIT OF THE SOUL
The existence of Gehinnom serves a profound Divine purpose that is ultimately for the benefit of the soul. In Jewish thought, God does not punish out of vengeance or malice. Instead, Gehinnom operates as a spiritual cleansing mechanism, often compared by classic commentators to a supernal washing machine. When a person commits transgressions in the physical world, these actions create spiritual impurities or stains that attach to the soul. Because the soul in its natural state is pure and derived from a Divine source, it cannot enter the ultimate spiritual paradise of Gan Eden while carrying these blemishes. The intense spiritual experience of Gehinnom burns away these attachments. Therefore, the process is an act of ultimate kindness, allowing a compromised soul to achieve rectification, heal from its spiritual sickness, and eventually earn its place in the World to Come. For the vast majority of souls, this purification process is temporary, lasting a maximum of twelve months.
THE SEVEN LEVELS OF GEHINNOM
The Talmud in Tractate Eruvin teaches that Gehinnom contains seven distinct levels or names, each corresponding to different types of spiritual rectification and depths of spiritual attachment to sin. These seven names are Sheol, Abaddon, Beer Shachat, Bor Shaon, Tit Hayaven, Tzalmavet, and Eretz Hatachtit. As explained in classical works such as the Reshit Chochmah, these chambers represent progressively deeper states of spiritual intensity. The fire of each level is vastly more intense than the one above it. The levels correspond to the specific severity of the sins committed and the degree to which a person integrated unholiness into their identity while living in the physical world.
THE SEVENTH LEVEL AND ETERNAL SEPARATION
While the upper levels of Gehinnom are temporary processing centers meant for purification and eventual release, the seventh and lowest level, Eretz Hatachtit, holds a different status in Torah law and mysticism. The Talmud in Tractate Rosh Hashanah explains that while standard sinners emerge after their designated period of cleansing, there is a distinct class of individuals whose spiritual corruption is absolute and unyielding. These include absolute heretics, apostates who entirely deny the Torah, informers who deliberately destroy the community, and those who lead the masses into severe sin while completely detaching themselves from the community. For these individuals, their essence has become entirely intertwined with evil, leaving no remaining spark of purity to cleanse. According to classical sources, such souls descend to the lowest depths and do not leave. The Talmud states that even after Gehinnom itself terminates or changes form, their punishment and separation endure for generations. In the ultimate framework, their spiritual form wears away, and they face absolute excision, known as Karet, which means being entirely cut off from the Divine source of eternal life.
THE RECONCILIATION OF JUSTICE AND MERCY
Ultimately, Torah Judaism views the totality of Gehinnom as a demonstration of perfect balance between Divine justice and mercy. The temporary levels ensure that minor and moderate flaws do not permanently bar an otherwise righteous person from eternal reward. Concurrently, the absolute permanence of the seventh level for the irredeemably wicked maintains the integrity of free will and moral consequence. It ensures that those who completely set themselves against the Creator and the creation face a reality that reflects their choices, demonstrating that every human action carries real, heavy, and cosmic weight.
