What is a Bris Milah
A Bris Milah is the Jewish covenant of circumcision performed on a baby boy when he is eight days old. This ritual dates back nearly four thousand years to Abraham, who was commanded by God to circumcise himself and his descendants. While many people think of it as a medical procedure, in Judaism it is a deeply spiritual act that seals a holy partnership between God and the Jewish people. It serves as a permanent physical sign of this eternal bond carried on the body of every Jewish male.
Equal to the Entire Torah
Jewish sages teach that the commandment of Bris Milah is so precious that it carries the weight of all the other six hundred and twelve commandments combined. One way the sages demonstrate this is through the practice of gematria, which is the study of the numerical values of Hebrew letters. The Hebrew word for covenant is Brit, and when you look at the spiritual mathematics behind this word and the context of the commandment, the numbers reveal a startling connection. Abraham was given this commandment in the book of Genesis, and the word Brit appears exactly thirteen times in that specific section of the Torah. In Hebrew tradition, the number thirteen represents the thirteen attributes of divine mercy. Furthermore, the Torah itself was given through three major covenants, but the physical sign of the Brit is considered the ultimate anchor of them all, making it the foundational root upon which the rest of the Torah stands.
The Divine Deed to the Land of Israel
The claim of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel is explicitly linked to the Bris Milah in the text of the Torah. When God commanded Abraham to perform the circumcision, it was not given as an isolated ritual, but rather as the direct condition for inheriting the land. God stated that in exchange for keeping this covenant, He would give the land of Canaan to Abraham and his children as an everlasting possession. This means that the physical boundary of the land and the physical mark on the body are legally and spiritually bound together.
The Competing Claim and Ishmael
This connection to the land becomes even clearer when you look at the other major group that claims a historical right to the region. Ishmael, the brother of Isaac and the ancestor of the Arab nations, was also circumcised by Abraham. However, Ishmael was circumcised when he was thirteen years old, whereas Isaac was circumcised at eight days old. Because Ishmael also carries a form of this covenant, Islamic tradition and Arab culture emphasize circumcision as well. Jewish sages explain that the long-standing conflict over the Land of Israel mirrors this ancient family dynamic. Both groups point to their circumcision as a sign of their connection to Abraham. The difference lies in the timing and the nature of the command, as Judaism teaches that the ultimate inheritance of the land was passed specifically through Isaac, who entered the covenant at eight days old before he could even choose it for himself.
Why Bris Milah is Unique to the Jewish People
Many nations and cultures around the world practice circumcision for health, cleanliness, or cultural tradition, but a Bris Milah is unique to Judaism. The difference is not just about cutting the skin, but about the specific spiritual steps required by Jewish law. A kosher Bris Milah includes three distinct parts which are the Milah, the Periah, and the Metzitzah. The step of Periah involves pulling back the delicate inner membrane, a crucial detail that other cultures do not practice. Without this specific step, the ritual is not considered valid under Jewish law. Additionally, a Bris Milah must be performed by a trained religious expert called a Mohel, who says specific blessings and performs the act with the pure intention of bringing the child into the covenant of Abraham. This transforms a physical surgery into a holy act that belongs exclusively to the Jewish chain of tradition.
