According to Jewish tradition, the final redemption requires two distinct messianic figures: Mashiach ben Yosef (the Messiah from the lineage of Joseph) and Mashiach ben David (the Messiah from the lineage of David). These two leaders correspond directly to the rectification of the ox and the donkey.
Joseph is explicitly compared to a firstborn ox in the blessings of Moses. By riding the donkey, the Davidic king demonstrates that the base physical drives and fanatic energies of the world have been completely subdued and harnessed for the service of the one true God.
When the holy ox of Joseph dismantles the arrogance of Esau, and the Davidic king subdues the wild materialism of Ishmael, the two arch-enemies lose their spiritual power. The shell of deception shatters. The ultimate triumph is achieved when the entire world, including the spiritual remnants of Esau and Ishmael, recognizes the ultimate unity of God, leaving Jacob to dwell in eternal peace and clarity.
