INTRODUCTION
The letter Beis (also spelled Bet) is the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet. While the first letter, Aleph, represents the singular, unmanifest oneness of the Divine, Beis represents the transition into plurality, creation, and the physical world. MEANING
The word “Beis” literally translates to “house” or “home” in Hebrew. Conceptually, it represents the idea of a dwelling place, a container, and containment itself. It introduces the concept of duality, which is necessary for relationship, partnership, and choice. Without the dual nature of Beis, there would be no separation between Creator and creation, and therefore no possibility for humanity to build a relationship with the Divine. It represents the vessel that holds the light, the form that gives shape to energy, and the physical reality that houses spiritual truths.
BEAUTY
The beauty of Beis lies in its harmonious balance between protection and openness. It is an aesthetic representation of safety and hospitality. As a home, its geometry balances stability through its strong horizontal and vertical lines with a welcoming openness on its left side. Its beauty is also found in its functional elegance, acting as the ultimate catalyst for narrative. By initiating the text of the Torah, its open left side invites the reader into the unfolding story of existence, drawing the eye forward into the expanse of the cosmic design.
GEMATRIA
In the system of Hebrew numerology, known as Gematria, Beis has the numerical value of two. This number symbolizes the dualities that define human existence, such as heaven and earth, spirit and matter, male and female, and light and darkness. While the number one signifies pure unity, the number two introduces the concept of a “second,” which allows for reflection and connection. In spiritual thought, the number two of Beis is not seen as a division that separates, but rather as a duality that creates a bridge for holy partnerships and relationships.
